Alternatives to Quicken

Deluxe

Quicken gets more expensive every year. In fact, the price is nearly doubled from last year! If you’re ready to try an alternative, I recommend these two programs. The first is completely free and the other has a free 30-day trial.

1. Personal Capital

My first recommendation is Personal Capital. This financial management software is completely free, no strings attached. It is an outstanding product. Personal Capital is easy to set up, easy to use, and keeps track of all your accounts in one place. It has especially good investment tools that are better than those that come with Quicken. Go here to try Personal Capital.

2. Moneyspire

My second recommendation is Moneyspire. This program is very similar to Quicken, it supports both Windows and Mac, and comes with a free 30-day trial. You can even import your Quicken data into Moneyspire so you don’t lose any history. Moneyspire is the best desktop personal financial management program next to Quicken and a great alternative if you are looking for a change. Go here to try Moneyspire.

I purchased Quicken 2017 not too long ago. When 2018 was released suddenly I'm being nagged with the upgrade screen. Unchecking the 'Remind Me Later' box does not prevent the nag screen from appearing intermittently to remind me to upgrade to 2018 again, and again, and again, and again ...
So now that I've paid good money for Quicken 2017 they are going to nag me to upgrade to 2018 constantly?
This is getting really, really old! I've been using Quicken for 10 years and I do not appreciate this at all ...

Quicken 2018 For Mac Review

  • edited April 2018
    Hi Mikey.
We apologize for the issues with the popup reminders regarding 2018. It is just reminders users of the program, like yourself, about our newest product.
The popups will end in time, unfortunately there is no ETA on when they will end.
    We appreciate your patience.
    Respectfully,
    ~ Quicken Harold.

I appreciate your response, but I think an email campaign would have been better than putting it in the software. Why cause so much disruption with the actual program? And why the option to not be reminded in the future if it just does so anyway?
  • edited December 2018
could not agree more with Mikey, why offer a fake not remind option?

Anybody else want to post this? So tired of your e-mails and flash screen wanting me to ‘upgrade’ to Quicken 2018 so that I can pay a monthly subscription. Stop it!
  • edited January 2018
There's a 'sale' every other week with Quicken...10%, 20%, 40%...one year subscription, two year subscription.
Every time there's another offer, another splash screen comes up when you open Quicken. Marketing is one thing...but the constant reminders are beyond annoying now.
And...settle on a price and term already. The constant yo-yo-ing is a very low class marketing move.
If you can put Quicken 'on sale' at 40% off at some times...then just lower the price to 40% off the original retail price and keep it there already.
  • edited December 2018
I paid to have the program not a subscription. I don’t want a subscription. The program shouldn’t remind me every week to upgrade. I’m ready to find another program.

I 'upgraded' to 2017 Deluxe September of 2017. Now every I start Quicken I get the message to upgrade to 2018.
Choosing to not be reminded has absolutely zero effect.

The moment I am required to pay for a subscription as opposed to simply buying a program is the moment I find other financial software.
  • edited September 2018
I, too, am finding the constant barrage of update reminders to be a big pain in the rear. Unchecking the remind me later box does no good. Quicken Harold's response is typical of Quicken: 'It will stop, but we don't know when; as to your comment that unchecking the remind me later button doesn't work, well. . .I'm not going to answer that!'
I also agree with the other comments regarding subscription service. If Quicken 2017 is the last version that can be purchased outright without a stupid subscription, then that is the last version I will own. I will be searching for an alternative in several years when this outlives its usefulness.
Quicken has done nothing for customer loyalty and nothing really to improve their product. They take, take, and take from their customers, but don't provide a quality product, anymore. Too bad.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled For the love of god, please make this stop.
This. Keeps. Happening. It's mid-January-the popup continues and seems to always say 'Last day.' I no longer have any confidence that is true. Please stop this nonsense. You've already annoyed me to the level where I will never, ever pay for a subscription to Quicken.
  • edited January 2018
A click a day keeps the upgrades away. I don’t mind one extra click. Just click the red dot in the upper left corner.
  • edited January 2018
This along with them not providing any new useful features in the upgrades are a couple reasons why I will NEVER buy a newer version. This may have been my fault, but I did not know that the product would BREAK and force you to upgrade after 3 years. I have purchased and recommended the product for 10+ years, but never again. I now tell everyone that Quicken/Intuit sucks and to stay away.

And ... the offer has been extended again 'exclusively for you' until 1/16/18. Yay. I'm really tired of seeing advertising every time I launch a product for which I paid (RPM 2017). Use to be an option to dismiss these (didn't work, but it was a start), but even that is gone. How about actually making the 'remind me later' clickable and having the ad opt-in?

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Complaint about Quicken 2018 Advertising!!.
Please stop the repeated advertising of Quicken 2018 inside my Quicken 2017 program!!! If I had received Q 2017 for free then I understand imbedded advertising. But I paid for it and I don't expect to have to repeatedly cancel the pop up ad for Q 2018. I'm ok with a couple of emails to let me know about the new version and any promotional pricing available. But it should not be embedded in a program that I have paid for. Please stop it!

Quicken 2017 for Mac ver 4.6.7 on a Mac with Sierra. For goodness sake, TURN OFF the endlessly repeating pop-up “reminding” me to update to the new version of Quicken. I have been a Quicken user for decades. Now, every time I open Quicken, your cursed pop-up appears which, on closing, generates a second pop-up that I need to close in order to work my account. EVERY TIME. Whoever convinced you that the way to sell Quicken is to alienate all of your current customers – not just once, but day after day, every time they open the product on their computer screens, is, in a word, insane -- and you, sir or madam, are insane for taking their advice.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Please stop the intrusive popups.
I'm trying to post this in a way that doesn't sound like a 'rant' as the moderators will remove it instantly. Many of us have reported that we constantly are bombarded with a 'upgrade reminder' that intrusively bugs us to upgrade. If the moderators do read the replies, it should be pretty apparent that all they're accomplishing is discouraging any of us from subscribing. That said, it is a server-side issue and within Quicken's ability to stop. Please do so. I'm being as respectful as possible, but all this is doing is pushing me to switch software brands two years sooner than I would have (since you have a subscription model now and will intentionally cripple much of QM2018's functionality in 2020). Thank you.

Quicken 2016 for Mac constantly nags me to upgrade to 2018. I do not want to upgrade. There is no way to keep this screen from popping up. I have purchased Quicken and don't feel that I should be treated like a shareware customer. Please remove this with an update. I feel this might be my last ride with Quicken as I have paid for upgrade after upgrade but have no desire or need for a subscription service to run a checkbook and an occasional budget.
  • I was able to live chat with someone. I asked them about this annoying popup and they told me it couldn't be disabled. Maybe if we all took the time to do this they might get the message and provide a way to disable it.The link is below. https://www.quicken.com/support#windows
